The Vikatadamshtri Buddhist Center began as the Baltimore Mahayana
Buddhist Center in November, 1995. The General
Program (GP) was held in a yoga and martial arts studio at the
Mill Center in Hamden until May of 1996 when the Thursday evening
classes moved to the Susquehanna Acupuncture and T'ai Chi Center
in Towson. Beginning September of 1996, Gen Sangkyong taught
General Program classes at 7:30 pm on Thursday evenings at the Stony
Run Friends Meeting House. In February of 1998 the Center
introduced the Foundation Program
(FP): a second set of classes that offer more in-depth study.
This program met Saturdays at the Homewood Friends Meeting House
on Charles Street near the Johns Hopkins University campus.
In July of 1999, through the kindness of local practitioners, Vikatadamshtri
Buddhist Center acquired a late-Victorian style home at 2937
N. Charles St. The home functions as a residence for several
practitioners, and as a place to coordinate the Center's activities.
Kelsang Chogden now teaches the Foundation
Program, and Teacher Training Program
(TTP) at the center. A number of sadhanas
(chanted prayers) are offered weekly in the mornings and evenings
at the center. In addition to the GP, FP, and TTP classes,
various retreats and other activities
are offered at the center throughout the year.
